16 Best (Legal) Websites to Watch Free Horror Movies Online

There are plenty of torrent websites out there with the latest horror movies to download, but: 1) they're illegally infringing on copyrights, and you could get in trouble, 2) the picture and audio quality might not be good, and 3) who knows what you're actually downloading? Virus scan, anyone? Here are 16 safer alternatives, websites where you can watch horror movies online legally and for free.

Legal?: Yes (public domain)
Sample Titles: Blood Tide, Devil Times Five, A Bucket of Blood, King of the Zombies, Driller Killer, Memorial Valley Massacre, Eegah, Oasis of the Zombies, Scream Bloody Murder, The Snake People
Bottom Line: Featuring a large selection of public domain horror movies -- including some overlooked by other public domain sites -- this is the only site on this list that offers the option of downloading the films to a PDA/iPod/PSP (a lot less risky than typical torrent sites), in addition to viewing online via the Google Video interface. However, less than 20 are actually viewable online through Google.

12. Internet Archive

Internet Archive© Internet Archive

Sample Titles: Blue Sunshine, Battle Royale, Children of the Corn, The Driller Killer, Ju-on: The Grudge 2, Day of the Triffids, Puppet Master, Freaks, Tarantula, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, The Thing from Another World, Faces of Death
Bottom Line: A nice list of, well, movies found online, with embedded videos from other sites or links to those other sites.

10. Retrovision

Bottom Line: A basic, no-frills site that focuses on its strong selection of public domain movies. As such, it's not the easiest site to browse.

Sample Titles: Blacula, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Frogs, Pumpkinhead, Troll 2, The Sentinel, Supernova, The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake, Dressed to Kill (1980), The Food of the Gods, J.D.'s Revenge, The Oblong Box, Wicked Stepmother, Session 9
Bottom Line: Impressive and professional-looking with public domain films and other entries not found on most other sites, although you're not able to sort by horror genre.

7. Hulu

Hulu© Hulu
Selection: Around 40 horror titles, from the 1950s to the 2000s
Video Quality: Excellent
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser
Legal?: Yes
Sample Titles: Dr. Phibes Rises Again, Amityville II: The Possession, Fatal Attraction, My Little Eye, Single White Female, Session 9, Madman, Nine Lives, Virus (1999), Parents, Pulse (2004), Bloody Mallory, Gamebox 1.0
Bottom Line: One of the few video sites to pay for the rights to show full-length, high-caliber movies for free, Hulu features a great selection of horror films unavailable for viewing elsewhere and provides many of these same flicks to sites like IMDb, AOL Video and Veoh.

6. Google Video

Google Video© Google
Selection: Hundreds of horror titles, from 1900s to 2000s
Video Quality: Fair
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser
Legal?: Hmmm....
Sample Titles: Rec, Day of the Triffids, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Battle Royale, Cannibal Holocaust, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Puppet Master, Phantasm, Shrunken Heads
Bottom Line: An unpredictable hodgepodge of public domain, out-of-print movies, foreign films and whatever else is cluttering the Web -- some playable through Google's video interface and some available on other sites. However, it's difficult to browse -- there's no filter by genre -- so it's best to search for specific titles. There's some material that's in violation of copyright law, but viewing it online won't get you in trouble.

Bottom Line: Veoh has a combination of user-generated content (around 400 horror movies, some of which may have some copyright issues) and professional content from studios (around 100 horror movies), some of which it gets from Hulu. The non-Hulu material requires installation of the Veoh video player to view. It's much easier than Google Video to locate the horror selections, which are sortable by genre.

4. YouTube

YouTube© YouTube
Selection: Hundreds of horror titles, from 1900s to 2000s
Video Quality: Fair
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser
Legal?: Iffy
Sample Titles: Night of the Creeps, Last House on the Left (1972), Ticks, Dark Night of the Scarecrow, The Stepfather, Suspiria, Ringu, Audition, Shrooms, The Others, 1408, When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Bottom Line: A longtime haven for user-generated content, YouTube now has licensed movies, including about 20 horror films -- a selection similar to Hulu. Like Google Video, the user content is hard to browse (and copyright questionable), but if you find a power user who's uploaded a lot of horror content, you can see it all in one handy location. Sadly, the movies are typically divided into 10-minute chunks.

3. FEARnet

FEARnet© FEARnet
Selection: 20 horror titles, mostly post-1990
Video Quality: Excellent
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser
Legal?: Yes
Sample Titles: Catacombs, Frontier(s), Trapped Ashes, To Let, Boogeyman (1980), Gothic, The Dentist, The Substitute (2008), Love Object, A Real Friend, Spectre
Bottom Line: Doesn't have many movies, but they're frequently top-notch, major DVD releases that haven't been available for long. They're cycled frequently, so the selection doesn't get stale.

2. Asian-Horror-Movies.com

Asian-Horror-Movies.com © Asian-Horror-Movies.com
Selection: Close to 500 horror titles, mostly post-1990, all from Asia
Video Quality: Fair
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser
Legal?: Unsure, since foreign films might be under copyright in certain countries but not in others
Sample Titles: Shutter, Ju-on: The Grudge, Dark Water (2002), Evil Dead Trap, Battle Royale, 303 Fear Faith Revenge, Art of the Devil 3, Bio-Zombie, Black House, Sick Nurses, Kwaidan, We're Going to Eat You, Re-cycle, Wild Zero
Bottom Line: This easily navigable site contains an astounding number of edgy, trendsetting horror movies from Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and more, many hard to find in the US.

1. TheOnlyDevice.com

TheOnlyDevice.com© TheOnlyDevice.com
Selection: Over 1,000 movies from the beginning of time
Video Quality: Good
Download or Watch in Browser?: Browser

Bottom Line: Tons of links to movies hosted on other sites, from old public domain selections to flicks just released on DVD to films still in theaters. This is why the Internet was invented.
